PlayStation enthusiasts have announced a week-long boycott in protest of Sony’s decision to discontinue manufacturing physical game discs for new PlayStation releases.
The PSBlackout campaign began off August 23 and runs through August 30. Protesters have been advised to avoid the PlayStation Network, not play games and not buy games or other PlayStation products during the demonstration.
The boycott follows Sony’s announcement that it will cease production of physical discs for new PlayStation games from 2028. “Many gamers are displeased with this shift, preferring to buy physical copies rather than relying solely on digital downloads.
The organisers of the campaign think that a decline in PlayStation activity could send a greater message to Sony than complaints online. But some players have slammed the effort, stating that just being offline may have little effect on the firm. Some Reddit users said a more effective form of protest would be to cut back on spending on games and PlayStation services.
The problem has also occurred in the comments sections of PlayStation game trailers and social media posts. The recent Phantom Blade Zero showcase, for example, saw comments about Sony’s migration to digital games, but the game itself had nothing to do with the company’s choice.
Sony has not suggested it will modify its stance. The corporation has also indicated it does not expect the move away from tangible media to substantially harm its operations.
For present, the PSBlackout movement is one of the largest organised protests against Sony’s shifting PlayStation strategy. It is not clear if the boycott will have any actual consequences for the corporation.
