After 21 Years, a Family Finally Lays Their Son to Rest

For one family in Balakot, a wound that stayed open for more than two decades has finally begun to heal. The remains of five year old Jamal Shafiq, who vanished during Pakistan’s catastrophic 2005 earthquake, have been found 21 years after he went missing.

Jamal was buried beneath the rubble of his family’s home when the massive earthquake struck in October 2005. Despite exhaustive search efforts in the disaster’s immediate aftermath, his family never found him, leaving them to live for more than 20 years without knowing what had become of their young son.

The breakthrough came during recent reconstruction work at the family’s house. While digging, workers came across a child’s clothing buried in the ground. Excavation continued, and shortly after, Jamal’s remains were recovered, bringing a long and painful chapter to an emotional close.

Speaking about the ordeal, Jamal’s father recalled how the family had searched tirelessly for months following the earthquake, yet all efforts to find him had failed. The recent discovery finally gave them the chance to say goodbye and give their son the proper burial he was always owed.

Following identification of the remains, funeral prayers were held, and Jamal was laid to rest with dignity. Family members said the moment carried a mix of profound grief and quiet relief, decades of unresolved sorrow finally meeting a sense of closure.

The 2005 earthquake remains one of the deadliest disasters in Pakistan’s history, having claimed thousands of lives and left countless families to carry the weight of loss for years afterward. Even now, stories like Jamal’s continue to surface, serving as painful reminders of the disaster’s lasting toll.

Jamal’s story has resonated deeply with many, standing as a testament to the enduring human cost of the earthquake, and to the quiet hope that, even after so many years, families can still find a measure of peace.
