PIA has taken a new step towards overhauling its fleet. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has a meeting with Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson in Washington to discuss the future expansion plans of the airline.
The talks were focused on a proposal for acquisition of 16 new aircraft under PIA’s long term fleet renewal program. The officials from both sides examined a range of aircraft options, looking for models that best suited the airline’s operational and commercial requirements, and reiterated their aim to reach an agreement shortly thereafter.
If it goes through, the acquisition would be a major upgrade for PIA, replacing older aircraft, expanding route capacity, improving fuel efficiency and providing passengers with a better overall travel experience. The move is also seen as part of a wider push to make the airline more reliable and competitive at home and abroad.
Officials say the plan is part of a broader phased approach to rebuilding PIA’s fleet over the coming years, in line with ongoing reforms to restore the airline’s finances, improve service and reassert its status as Pakistan’s flag carrier. “The meeting with Boeing is a sign of the government’s continued focus on restoring the airline industry and backing PIA’s long-term turnaround,” they add.
