Six out of 11 electric buses that were launched in Murree under the Punjab government’s Green Bus Electric Bus Project have experienced technical problems, and the authorities have suspended their operation till the problems are sorted out.
Murree Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi took notice of the flaws and rushed to the buses with a technical team to check their condition.
Following the inspection, the deputy commissioner wrote to the Transport Secretary demanding prompt repairs and full technical clearance for the damaged buses.
Officials said a team of Chinese engineers would probably visit Murree to identify and rectify the alleged flaws. Engineers will also be conducting a thorough review of all 11 electric buses to ensure they meet the required safety and operating requirements.
The deputy commissioner has asked the officials not to allow the buses to ply on public roads until technicians determine that they are fully functioning and give the required technical approval.
“The precautionary measures are being taken to safeguard the residents and tourists from possible safety concerns, inconvenience and lack of quality of transport services,” the district administration said.
Authorities said that once the technical team declares the buses fully functioning, better and safer travel facilities would be offered.
In June, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, had approved the transfer of 11 electric buses to the administration of Murree district. The objective of the project is to minimise pollution and to offer safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable public transport to residents and tourists.
