Punjab CM Orders Dedicated Bike Lanes on Major Lahore Roads

Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered the authorities to set up special motorcycle lanes on the main roadways of Lahore for better traffic management and road safety.

The chief minister also directed strict enforcement of traffic laws for cars working under the Suthra Punjab scheme, during a traffic management meeting on Monday.

Maryam Nawaz remarked that there is a need to take strict action against those who violate the traffic regulations, and sanitation vehicles should respect the traffic rules without any exception. She also expressed grief at the loss of a child girl, who was apparently hit by a Suthra Punjab vehicle.

The meeting reviewed measures to improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety and overall traffic management in the city.

The chief minister directed tight enforcement of zebra crossings and deployment of camera-based digital monitoring to ensure that motorists adhere to the laws for pedestrian crossings. Officials also reviewed a plan to put alert buttons to help pedestrians cross busy roadways.

Maryam Nawaz asked the authorities to carry out a trial project on The Mall to increase compliance with zebra crossing restrictions. She also asked to build Ferozepur Road as a model route for better traffic management.

The chief minister further directed the authorities to ensure that laden tractor-trolleys do not ply without suitable covers. She also emphasised the need for compliance by Suthra Punjab tractor-trolleys for the need.

She also ordered a crackdown on overloaded tractor-trolleys across the province to improve road safety and minimise traffic risks ahead of the next sugarcane season.

The officials were also directed to take prompt measures for the clearance of congestion at Shahdara and Thokar Niaz Baig. Maryam Nawaz said that the key entry and departure ports of Lahore should be kept clear and free of any excessive traffic impediment.
