Despite reports that Apple has dropped plans for a big iPhone redesign centred around glass, the company is still on track to deliver a substantial design refresh for its 20th-anniversary iPhone lineup in 2027.
But Apple is still working on a glass-heavy design for its iPhone Pro models in 2027, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says. This article disputes earlier statements from various sources that Apple had dropped ambitions to make an all-glass iPhone due of production issues.
The next iPhone Pro versions are rumoured to include glass on the front and back, with the material wrapping around the edges of the phone. It would be a thin metal frame between the two glass portions to give a more integrated, seamless look.
Apple is apparently developing the handsets under the internal model names V73 and V74.
But Gurman claims Apple has dropped a more ambitious take on the design. The prior concept apparently had more glass, and was dropped in the early phases of development.
That could explain why there are contradicting rumours about Apple’s 2027 iPhone intentions. The sources citing the scrapped all-glass iPhone might’ve been referring to the crazier design idea, not the glass-centric one that’s still in the works.
Earlier sources also suggested Apple may bring the design to future iPhone Pro and Pro Max models. Recent leaks, however, haven’t revealed that the business is developing a different model with an all-glass shell.
However, the current reports say that the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models are going to get the big glass-centric revamp in 2027.
The 2027 iPhone line-up is likely to be a major milestone for Apple as the corporation commemorates two decades since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007. The anniversary could be an opportunity for Apple to celebrate with one of the largest design shifts in the history of the iPhone.
