WhatsApp has temporarily suspended several accounts and put them “under review,” prohibiting those users from using the messaging service. Meta said it was aware of the issue and is actively working to restore access.
Many people took to X and Threads in the last few hours to report the problem, alleging their accounts were banned unexpectedly and without any clear explanation or warning.
With more than 3 billion monthly active users worldwide, a small fraction of affected accounts might mean thousands of users losing access to WhatsApp temporarily.
And affected users were told that they were being examined for compliance with WhatsApp’s Terms of Service, based on their account behaviour and device details.
The warning also said that consumers would normally get the review outcome within 24 hours.
Meta Trying To Get Back Access
Meta acknowledged the issue in a statement to TechCrunch, saying it was aware of the problem and had already started restoring access to affected users and is working to fix the issue.
But the corporation did not say what prompted the unexpected rush to review accounts. It did not say whether the problem was limited to particular countries or regions.
Meta’s statement suggests that at least some of the account limitations were placed in error, rather than for confirmed violations of its regulations.
The corporation has not said how many accounts were flagged or what caused the account review system to flag them.
For now, customers whose accounts were put under review will have to wait until WhatsApp completes the verification procedure. Meta says it’s started to restore access to affected accounts.
